Faber-Castell Loom Metallic Fountain Pen and Giveaway!!!

The Faber-Castell company was founded in 1761 by Kaspar Faber, who was a cabinet maker. In 1898,  Ottilie von Faber the heir to the A.W. Faber company married Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, and the company name was changed to Faber-Castell. Over the years, the company has built a reputation for fine writing products, pencils, and a wide range of art supplies. Recently, they introduced a new color line for their well know “Loom” series, which have chrome barrels and three cap color options: Metallic Grey, Metallic Olive Green, and Metallic Light Blue. I reached out to Faber-Castell and they graciously sent me a few pens for review, and I will be giving one away. If you would like to be entered to win your own Faber-Castell Loom with a broad nib and your choice of cap color, leave a comment on the review and let me know what your experience is with Faber-Castell products. Shipping in the U.S. is free, but if outside the U.S. I will cover the first $8. The giveaway will close at midnight on 6/30/18 and I will announce the winner on 7/1/18. Be sure to sign up for follow-up emails to ensure I can contact you if you are the winner. Thank you to Faber-Castell for sending these for review.

Packaging: Each pen has an outer box with the image of a suspension bridge, the Faber-Castell logo, and “Since 1761.” On the closed end of this box, there is a sticker detailing the color, model, and nib size. There is also a thin, rectangular white inner box with the Faber-Castell logo and “Since 1761” imprinted on it. Inside the inner box, a white tray slides out holding the pen in a plastic sleeve, an instruction manual, and a standard international ink cartridge. The packaging is simple and effective. Its size makes this box ideal to be reused as either a pen case or a pencil box that can easily be slipped into a bag.

First Thoughts: Each pen cap is an impressive metallic color with a satin finish that pops against the polished metal finish of the body.

Design: The body of the pen is cylindrical with a gradual taper towards the nib. The body is made of polished chrome-plated metal with 5 slightly raised rings on the grip section. Since the cap snaps on, there are no stepdown or threads to impede the design. The satin-finished cap has a gradual taper from a thin, chrome cap band towards the finial, and is engraved with the Faber-Castell logo and “Since 1761.” The clip is spring-loaded, has squared edges, and has a slight upturn at the end which allows it to be easily secured to clothes or a pencase. The cap finial is engraved with the Faber-Castell jousting knights logo, and the bottom finial has an interesting concave shape. The bottom finial also has a thin recessed groove which allows the cap to be posted securely.

Nib Performance: I received pens with fine, medium, and broad nibs to review. The nibs have a repeating dot pattern, the Faber-Castell jousting knights logo, and the letters F, M, or B (which corresponds to the nib size) engraved. All three nibs wrote beautifully out of the box. The Fine nib had a small amount of feedback and was the perfect balance of a wet/dry writer. The medium nib was perfectly smooth and had the same wet/dry balance. The broad nib was also a smooth writer, but was a wet writer laying down thick lines.

Filling System:  The Loom series are filled via standard international cartridge or via a standard international converter. The pen comes with a cartridge so you can get started writing as soon as you get it or you can purchase a converter.

Value: The Loom fountain pen retails for $55 USD. I think this is a great price for a “next-level” pen or even for a “entry-level” pen.

Overall: I have heard great things about Faber-Castell for a while and now I understand why fans are so passionate about their pens. These wrote beautifully out of the box and have enough weight to feel the pen when using it, but not so heavy that it tires out your hand as you write. It is one of the best writing pens that I have used, especially in this price range. I highly recommend adding at least one to your collection.

  1. I own Faber-Castell ball point pens, graphite pencils, classic color pencils and watercolor. I’ve been buying the brand for over 15 years now. I really love the quality. But I’ve never tried their fountain pens. Looks very promising 🙂

  2. I’ve been a big big fan of my Looms, though that’s the only Faber Castell fountain pen I’ve tried so far, though I’ve had various pencils over the years. Between my husband and myself we have 3 Looms now, all with a medium nib. I would be very curious to try the broad nib too, I’m sure it’s just as smooth and enjoyable!

  3. Big fan of the Faber Castell nibs, at least on the loom series. I haven’t had the budget or opportunity to try some of the higher end models or the newer Writinik/Grip series

  4. I’ve had their lead and Polychromos pencils for the longest time. They’re awesome. I’ve never had any experience with any of their fountain pens though. This could be my chance. Great review on the Loom. Thank you.

  5. I recently picked up my second F-C Loom and continue to be impressed. Very nice ergonomic design and a super smooth writer. My only complaint is the snap-on cap is very tight and requires a strong pull to remove, but it also means it doesn’t dry out easily!

    1. I did have one older friend that had problems with her hands struggle a bit trying to uncap the pen. But you’re right, it definitely is a trade off to not dry out.

  6. I have always admired the Faber-Castell esthetic, and particularly like the new metallic caps on the Loom pen. I was fortunate to find the rare Platino Intuition Wood in Pernambuco at a pen show a couple of years ago. I had been searching for that pen for a long time!

  7. Well written and comprehensive review. Thanks for details on the finishes of cap and body. I love my loom and it could really use a brother or sister.

  8. I’ve had minimal experience with Faber Castell pens. Have had the fortune of test writing with one from a friend and though I enjoyed the experience, I have not been able to purchase one yet. Other commitments keep popping up. Thank you for such a great review!

  9. Great review! I have several fountain pens I love, including a Waterman Gentleman as my high end, a Caran D’Asche, my beloved Rotring 600 and my Lamy’s. I have not had an opportunity to try a Faber-Castell pen. Metal finishes are my favorite, and as a weaver, the Loom series had definitely caught my eye!

  10. Very nice review. I’m just starting out in the world of fountain pens and have no experience whatsoever with Faber-Castell. I really like the looks of this pen and would love to try one out!

  11. It looks like you covered all the bases in this review. I do like a broad nib! The only Faber-Castell product I own is a ballpoint pen; I have wanted a Loom for quite a while, but have not had to funds to purchase one.

  13. Been eyeing the looms for a couple years now. At first, the chunky cap didn’t appeal to me , but the design has gradually grown on me. Have never owned or used a Faber Castell fountain pen.

  14. I used a Faber Castell Emotion fountain pen once and it was a great writer and everything, but my hand was too big for it, so it was not the best for me.

  17. I’ve never had the chance to try a Loom, but I’ve heard fabulous things about them. My main experience is with their ink, which is fantastic. Saturated yet easy to clean, and super well behaved. Graf von Faber Castell Moss Green, in particular, is a beautiful color and one of my favorites! It was one of the first full bottles of ink (as opposed to samples) that I bought, in fact, and it’s still a favorite today!

    1. I tried the blue/black in a sample a few years ago and loved it. I have to add abottle to my collection at some point. I highly recommend trying a Loom, they are pretty awesome
